What’s the significance? Read some military pen talk on bolt action customised pens:

AFM 36-2903 says “In order to present the proper military image, pencils and pens will be concealed. (EXCEPTION: When carried in compartment of left BDU pocket, not to exceed two.)”

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Regulation 39-1 says something similar. Found a discussion board on this very topic in fact—-Adding a pen pocket to the BDU (Battle Dress Uniform)—-http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=7477.0 because pens are important and cool, obviously.
