Ctenolepisma calvum, also known as ghost silverfish are indigenous to Europe and Central America, and were first discovered in Japan in 2022.
They devour paper!

Ancient documents are at risk of being munched (eaten) by these hungry pests, and the females can reproduce without males, making them hyper invasive* (*adjective; tending to spread very quickly and undesirably or harmfully).

Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties plans to launch a website dedicated to the ghost silverfish, and also plan to send, free of charge, sticky traps and bait containing expellant to facilities where the pest has been found.
As someone who imports books from Japan, I am also very concerned about this news, and consider it a Kaiju-level threat against us all. . . . Ghost Silverfish cannot forgive mankind for doomscrolling for hours, so we must remind them, that we will fight for our texts and cultural properties until the bitter end. . . . Arrrggghhh!!! Arrrggghhh!!! Arrrggghhh!!!
