The last post about Crystallized Books reminded me of a great song from a wonderful artist. Upon revisiting the song’s fantastic music video, I immediately wanted to share it!
In 1997, Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk collaborated with French director Michel Gondry on a series of music videos beginning with Human Behavior, followed by Isobel, and concluding with Bachelorette. The collaboration proved long-lasting, with Gondry directing a total of eight music videos for Björk.

Their work together is always pure dream logic, executed with a passion and warmth that allows the audience some semblance of narrative lucidity, but excelling as audio-visual treats regardless of how one interprets their multilayered story-telling. In short; this is a brilliant music video to be enjoyed, especially for book lovers:
Bachelorette is from her fourth studio album Homogenic. The video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Art Direction which really, shouldn’t surprise anyone.
“Michel explains very well the way I create my songs. When I write, I plant little seeds. Then, the question is: When will they be ripe? And that is up to Michel. For example, my favorite Michel video is Isobel. It’s Michel who found the poetry in it. He also found the thread we had on the first videos: Human Behavior, Isobel and Bachlorette … It’s the same story with the same character who is neither Björk nor Gondry but a third person: us. It’s the story of a girl frightened by adults – a teenager who becomes aware of her femininity – then an instinctive character who discovers her femininity, with the good sides and the bad sides. In the end of Bachelorette, she realizes she would be better where it all started: in the woods, alone. These videos are my different sides.” ~ Björk (Les Inrockuptibles n ° 185)
“She [Bjork] finds a book that explains her destiny to her, must follow it and as long as she follows what the book tells her to do, the book continues to be written and announces to her that she is going to meet a publisher. She is going to meet a producer who is going to do a show around her story on Broadway. We see his story replayed on the stage of the theater. There is the room within the room. Until the day when in real life, she separates from her publisher. She breaks the pact with her book. So all the books are erased. People throw it away, nature takes over, invading everything (from spectators to the stage). Finally, she finds herself at the starting point: in nature. To create the music video for this romantic song, Bjork had simply told me that she was part of the Human Behavior and Isobel trilogy where she was depicted as a creature living alone in the woods.” ~ Michel Gondry » (Interview dvdrama.net – Mars 2007)
