“Library of Us” by Artist Es Devlin for Miami Art Week 2025

Library of Us is a luminous triangular bookshelf set in a circular reflecting pool on Faena Beach. (https://www.faena.com/miami-beach/things-to-do/event-calendar/miami-art-week-at-faena)

Crowds have been gathering during Miami Art Week (@miamiartweek) to experience the 50-foot-wide installation by artist Es Devlin (@esdevlin), commissioned by Faena Art (@faenaart) for their 10th anniversary at Art Basel Miami Beach.

The monolithic sculpture invites collective reading in response to what Devlin calls “our contemporary erosion of focus.” Shaped like a sundial or compass, the sculpture directs its gaze both toward the Atlantic and back toward Miami. Delicate paperbacks rest just inches above the waterline, a striking reminder that Miami is now 400 times more prone to flooding than it was 19 years ago. At almost 20 feet tall, Library of Us contains 4,000 books drawn from 2,500 titles that have most shaped Devlin’s ideas. Visitors encounter one another across a circular reading table—completing a full rotation every ten minutes. – text by @ocula.art
